e-F@ctory concept

Securely connecting production to the cloud

Cloud solutions and the Internet of Things enable predictive maintenance, service support through augmented reality, mobile apps and much more. With the e-F@ctory concept, Mitsubishi Electric offers a way to develop cyber-secure, open edge computing solutions for the direct connection of production to the cloud.

The variety of initiatives to promote digital transformation in Europe and around the world is confusing. In addition to security issues, it is certainly one of the reasons for the reluctance that can still be observed when it comes to connecting production to the cloud, despite the tempting business potential. "A well thought-out transfer concept with data processing at the edge and various security mechanisms can even reduce the time and effort required to permanently secure your own hardware and software systems," says Thomas Lantermann, Senior Solution Consultant at Mitsubishi Electric.

The strength of this concept is first and foremost the collection of large volumes of production data from both in-house components and third-party devices. The freely scalable edge computing solution with the C-Controller from Mitsubishi as the smallest unit processes the data within the automation platform in such a way that the delays of the cloud are avoided and the real-time requirements of production are met.

The C-Controller solution can transfer the data directly to ERP/MES systems, cloud solutions or your own applications. A software development kit (SDK) is available for this purpose. Thomas Lantermann: "No special programming knowledge is required to use it: Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) simply agree on a data structure and the frequency of exchange and provide the C-Controller with the IP address and login information for the cloud. Otherwise, everyone remains in their familiar domain."

The exchange of the data structure is backed by security mechanisms and meets the requirements of IT protection through authentication, identification and up-to-date encryption. as
