Bosch Rexroth and partners combine automation with the IoT

Machine control, IT and the Internet of Things are seamlessly interconnected in modern automation. Bosch Rexroth connects these worlds with the automation platform ctrlX Automation.

The company offers its own IoT solutions and applications from third-party providers as apps via the ctrlX World partner network. These can be used to adapt the functions of the ctrlX Core control solution as required. The ctrlX Core not only functions as a machine controller, but also as a secure and intelligent gateway solution. Thanks to its openness and numerous interfaces, the controller is also suitable for brownfield installations to retrofit IoT connectivity and IoT functions to machines and systems.

With the ctrlX IOT software, the Bosch Rexroth automation platform already has important basic apps such as a firewall, VPN client and an OPC UA server and client. These are supplemented by partner IoT solutions. This gives users a wide selection of apps and plenty of scope for action.

Prescient Devices in ctrlX World stands for rapid IoT application development. With the Node-Red-based Prescient Designer, the company offers a SaaS solution for designing, simulating, distributing, operating and expanding IoT/AI systems. This makes it possible to program thousands of IoT devices such as the ctrlX Core centrally in the cloud and transfer the program code to the devices with a single click. This allows them to be commissioned and maintained efficiently.

Andy Wang, Founder & CEO at Prescient Devices, says: "Together with Bosch Rexroth, we want to simplify and accelerate the development of IoT applications without the need for complex technology. The Prescient Designer is tailored to the Bosch Rexroth community and platform. This enables an engineer to fully design and create an edge-to-cloud IoT solution within a few weeks, for example. Compared to traditional IoT development, this results in 12 times faster development, 6 times lower costs and continuously increasing real-time management and analysis intelligence."

Ixon is also a partner of ctrlX World. Ixon offers an end-to-end IIoT solution for all remote maintenance requirements: from hardware to the cloud. Bart van den Corput, Key Account Manager at IXON, explains: "Our goal is to promote and support the IIoT transition among machine builders by providing a secure cloud environment with all the technology needed to make IIoT directly accessible worldwide."

Ixon is partnering with Bosch Rexroth to offer machine builders even more flexibility in creating an IIoT solution that meets their needs. This allows them to easily integrate IIoT into their automation solutions. For example, users can download the IXagent app in the ctrlX Automation Community app zone to access all the functionalities of the IXON cloud platform - such as remote access, cloud data logging, alarms and notifications.

HiveMQ solutions are also available in ctrlX World. HiveMQ offers an MQTT broker for the ctrlX Core controller. This enables data exchange between different hardware and software platforms. MQTT is an industry standard that has become very popular for IoT use cases such as smart manufacturing and forms the basis for use cases such as connected cars, logistics, Industry 4.0 and connected IoT products.

Hans Michael Krause, Head of Product Management ctrlX World at Bosch Rexroth, explains: "With all these IoT solutions provided by ctrlX World, users can easily implement the networking of the necessary processes in automation according to the smartphone principle: simply download the app and start. Bosch Rexroth also provides numerous industry-specific applications of its own. If users want to incorporate their personal knowledge, they can also simply create apps themselves via the automation platform in all common programming languages."
