Increase accuracy and speed

In collaboration with Aucxis, Sato has increased speed and efficiency at Roba Metals with its CL4NX RFID label printer.

With an average of 7,000 steel pallets in stock and several thousand delivered each week, Roba Metals' service and sales office in Genk, Belgium, stores 20,000m2 of stainless steel coils that are processed into blanks for customers. To enable accurate pallet identification and automatic location and load control, the metal construction company needed an RFID-enabled track & trace solution that would provide an up-to-date overview of its logistics processes.

Solution provider Aucxis proposed the CL4NX RFID printer to the Dutch company in combination with the Atlas 'Track&Trace' solution, so that all pallets can be monitored throughout the entire logistics flow - from storage after production to loading onto trucks for transportation.

"The Sato CLNX printer is one of the most widely used RFID printers in the world," says Lauran D'hanis, Business Consultant at Aucxis. "It allows us to print and encode numerous RFID labels while enabling bulk scanning and a smoother process. We have also configured this printer in our middleware software so that it can be easily implemented in future Aucxis solutions. The technical support from Sato has been excellent throughout and has helped us to simplify the process."

The successful partnership with Sato has enabled Aucxis to install the CL4NX printer as part of an RFID pilot project at Roba Metals. Since then, the company's traditional barcode scanners have been replaced with a real-time detection and localization system linked to the existing warehouse management system ("WMS").

D'hanis added: "At Roba Metals, each pallet is fitted with two tags printed via the SATO CL4NX RFID printer to enable loading by both forklift trucks and overhead cranes. In total, five cranes have been fitted with an RFID antenna to scan the load, while six forklift trucks have been fitted with an antenna at the front to scan and one at the rear to determine their position for absolute accuracy. This means you can now see where and when a pallet has been picked up and set down, as the data is automatically stored in the company's WMS."

Roba Metals also plans to use RFID scanning during delivery to the customer. Status changes of shipments in the WMS, printing of transport documents and invoicing can all be automated to save time, improve delivery accuracy and increase efficiency.

Emiel van Dreumel, Partner Manager at Sato Benelux, says: "It has been a pleasure to work with Aucxis and support the RFID pilot project with Roba Metals. The CL4NX is ideal for this type of manufacturer as it improves the visibility of stock in the stores while preventing incorrect deliveries of goods from the warehouses to the stores. We look forward to working with Aucxis on their future RFID customer projects."
