Laser marking

Now everything is clear!

Aviation specialist Gilo Industries relies on laser marking for better component tracking.

Gilo Industries comprises several technology companies that develop products and solutions in the fields of air defense, commercial aviation and recreational aviation. Each individual company has unique design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities that enable them to think outside the box and help shape the aviation technology of the future. Thanks to Datalogic's Ulyxe laser marking system and close collaboration with specialist supplier Laser Lines, Gilo has increased the throughput and accuracy of its component marking processes.

Several Gilo companies - most notably Rotron Power, manufacturer of advanced rotary piston engines, and Mako, manufacturer of motorized surfboards - anticipate an increased need to mark components with serial numbers and inspection marks to improve traceability and audit processes. Before Datalogic's laser marking solution was used, serial numbers had to be milled in using a hand-operated engraving machine. Here, the engraving process was heavily dependent on the individual line guidance of the user and the results were correspondingly inconsistent. The professional standard that Gilo sets for its brands could often not be achieved with the manual milling process. Many small individual components could not be marked in this way due to the high risk of product damage.

Gilo was looking for a solution for clear component marking with 100% accuracy. In collaboration with specialist supplier Laser Lines, Gilo set out on the search. The choice fell on the diode-pumped solid-state laser system (DPSS system) Ulyxe from Datalogic. A DPSS system is suitable for marking components of different sizes made of different materials - such as metal, metal alloys, plastics and other materials - with alphanumeric characters, logos and machine-readable codes because it works with shorter energy pulses and therefore enables more accurate markings. High-quality, clear markings are produced on all materials, especially plastics.

In addition to the quality of the markings themselves, the small form factor, low operating costs and flexible use of the Datalogic Ulyxe system also contributed to Gilo's decision. The device and workstation have a compact design and could be easily integrated into the Gilo production area.

Following installation, Laser Lines trained Gilo's staff on how to use the new solution to ensure safe operation and accurate results. The user has seen significant time savings in laser marking and increased throughput of engine components to be marked. From now on, all Gilo products are traceable. pb
