Camera becomes AI-ready via vision app

The NXT rio and rome from IDS show what a flexible embedded solution for industry looks like: An AI vision app transforms the industrial cameras into inference cameras. The hardware and software are designed in such a way that AI-based tasks can be solved directly in the device.

With the NXT product line, IDS offers an industrial-grade camera platform that enables image processing directly in the device. By installing vision apps, the user determines which image processing tasks the device should solve. In future, this principle will also enable the use of neural networks, for example for object recognition or object classification.

An AI vision app developed by IDS reconfigures the embedded hardware so that, for example, the FPGA acts as an AI accelerator. At the same time, it ensures that users can load and execute pre-trained artificial neural networks (ANNs) of different architectures on the cameras. In future, it will also be possible to install several networks in parallel, which will then map successive work steps.

The camera models also offer a free choice of lens thanks to a C-mount lens holder, industrial-grade M12 circular connectors, a serial RS232 interface, GigE network connection and PoE (Power-over-Ethernet). Instead of a continuous, unfiltered data stream, images, pre-processed data or results are transmitted directly to PCs or machine controllers.

Kai Hartmann, Product Manager IDS NXT, summarizes: "The IDS NXT rio and rome models redefine industrial cameras. Thanks to the vision app-based concept, they can be flexibly modified and, in conjunction with the robust housing, standardized connections and powerful hardware components, enable an easy-to-integrate embedded solution for AI tasks."

Prototypes of the AI-capable cameras were on show live for the first time at Vision 2018. The models are now available not only with sensors from different manufacturers and resolution classes, but also as board-level variants for machine or device construction. as
