OPC UA Demonstrator

Machines speak one language

With its OPC UA demonstrator at Automatica, the Robotics + Automation Association of the VDMA is presenting a future-proof approach to standardized and manufacturer-independent data exchange and thus the basis for interoperable communication in the smart factory.

At the beginning of 2017, VDMA Robotics + Automation launched several initiatives to develop data models for the uniform and open communication standard OPC UA. OPC UA stands for Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture and its architecture makes it possible to provide platform- and manufacturer-independent communication across different levels of the automation pyramid and to dissolve the strictly hierarchical data flow.

Together with member companies, the Machine Vision, Integrated Assembly Solutions and Robotics departments are developing cross-manufacturer information models for the first time: this will enable machines to speak the same language in future.

VDMA Robotics + Automation has decided to build an OPC UA demonstrator so that the networking possibilities with OPC UA do not remain just an abstract construct. This will be presented for the first time at Automatica and will show how OPC UA can be used in production technology in the future.

Two use cases will be shown on the demonstration area at Automatica: Firstly, capability-based control: an assembly cell for the production of fidget spinners integrates components and systems from more than 20 manufacturers. Interoperable integration is achieved by means of capability-based description.

Secondly, condition monitoring: several robot manufacturers show how condition monitoring can be implemented in the cloud, regardless of the manufacturer and robot type. All relevant condition data is clearly displayed on the dashboard. as
