Gripper tuning with the VACUBALL
Significantly reduced number of grippers thanks to maximum flexibility
With the aim of reducing the number of grippers and therefore set-up times and storage costs in automotive manufacturing, the Vacuball is a variable ball joint that adapts flexibly and automatically to different workpiece geometries during the handling process. The patented, new technical development means that a single gripper can be used for several workpiece designs.
The handling process is very simple: First, the gripper is placed on a workpiece, e.g. a car body part. When the Vacuball approaches the body part, it is in the released state. When the Vacuball is placed on the part, it automatically and variably adjusts its height and angle while still loose. Once the desired positioning has been achieved, the Vacuball is pressurized. When the vacuum is switched on, both the position of the Vacuball is blocked and the vacuum cup is activated.
This setting is maintained until the vacuum is released again.
For series production, the Vacuball can also be controlled by a separate vacuum circuit. The alignment then remains blocked and the vacuum cup can be controlled separately.
Depending on the application and workpiece, the Vacuball is fitted with a vacuum cup or with an individually developed mounting adapter to which several vacuum cups are mounted. The Vacuball ball joints are compatible with all standard EOAT components.
This eliminates time-consuming set-up times for workpieces with different geometries. In addition, the significantly lower number of grippers required reduces both investment and storage costs. A clear cost efficiency in the production process.
The innovation is currently being successfully tested by both a German and a French car manufacturer. A gripper equipped with several Vacuballs handles several different outer door parts.
