Accident prevention

Secure bin-picking

Accident prevention in industrial production environments using steel fencing and enclosures for machines is the focus of SMM Stahl- und Maschinenbau. SMM has developed a safety solution specifically for the bin-picking process, which has already been put to practical use several times.

The 3D model shows a robot cell with three chambers (integrated into an all-round shielding safety fence). The pallet cages are moved into and out of the chambers from the outside. In this example, the robot arm with camera system and gripper would be located in front of the middle chamber inside the fence. © SMM

The SMM robot cell for bin picking is available in various versions: In the version with two or three cells next to each other, these are loaded with full pallet cages, which can be controlled by a permanently installed robot arm. This ensures that production is not interrupted when a pallet cage is empty. The robot simply swivels over to the next box, allowing the empty box to be removed and replaced with a full box. The chambers are loaded through doors, which are then closed and electrically secured. The chambers not currently being operated by the robot can be closed alternately, for example pneumatically, by movable hoods to prevent employees from reaching into the boxes and being injured by the robot arm suddenly swinging around. Magnetic switches ensure safety. pb
