Diamond burnishing tools

Smooth surfaces economically

High surface finishes are increasingly required, even for hard and small components. New diamond burnishing tools ensure economical surface finishing with roughnesses of Rz < 1 µm.

The surface quality achieved during normal turning is too poor for many applications, as the performance and quality of high-precision products depends largely on their surface quality. In order to improve this, costly and time-consuming grinding, honing, lapping or polishing is usually required. In the first half of the year, Hommel + Keller Präzisionswerkzeuge launched new diamond burnishing tools that address the requirements of economical and efficient surface finishing.

Fine surfaces regardless of geometry and material

"Our Zeus diamond burnishing tools achieve roughness depths of Rz < 1 µm - with short throughput times and low investment. They process cylindrical, conical, convex or concave surfaces, even with small geometries. Flat-sided applications are also no problem. By using diamond tips, almost all materials - including hardened steels and high-strength materials such as titanium and superalloys - can be smoothed," says Adrian Sunderer, Product Manager at Hommel + Keller.

The so-called smooth rolling technology smoothes and hardens workpiece surfaces without cutting. In this reliable process, the polished diamond tip in the head of the tool glides over the component to be machined with adjustable contact pressure and cold-forms the roughness profile of the surface topography. The Rz values go down to below 1 µm. The surface is stabilized and hardened. This also improves the dynamic load capacity and the load-bearing capacity of the surface. Sunderer: "Workpieces machined in this way have many advantages: Overall performance and efficiency increase, higher loads are possible and the service life is significantly extended. The smoothed components can also improve wear and tear on the machine elements and reduce operating temperatures and functional noise."

The diamond smoothing tools are suitable for all series sizes and the production of prototypes and can be used on all standard lathes (conventional, short and long lathes) and also on machines with limited workspace. They are also easy to handle and can be used without additional equipment. The counter-pressure - depending on the material to be processed - is set and tolerances are compensated for via a spring system. The user can change the diamond tip without changing the basic tool setting. The point height is integrated in the upper edge of the shank. The tools can be used for different smoothing applications.

User-friendly handling

The company offers the new smoothing tool series in two different versions. These are each available as sets with a basic shank in 10 mm × 10 mm or 16 mm × 16 mm and shank adapters to 12 mm × 12 mm and 16 mm × 16 mm or 20 mm × 20 mm and 25 mm × 25 mm. The tool in the 510 set can be adjusted up to +/-10° thanks to the integrated adjustment option in the shank and is ideal for smoothing shafts with cylindrical surfaces and also suitable for cones and radii to a limited extent. The 520 set is exactly the right tool for smoothing flat surfaces, conical, convex and concave geometries as well as up to the collar. The head can be variably adjusted within a swivel range of +/-90° and can therefore be used universally. The diamond smoothing tips are available with tip radii from 0.4 to 1 mm.

"Cutting speed and feed rate are highly interdependent when using our diamond burnishing tools and must be adapted to the respective application. Equally important is the use of coolant to ensure the necessary lubrication. If you follow these recommendations, you can achieve the best surface finish - quickly, easily and cost-effectively," says Adrian Sunderer.
