INDUSTRIAL Production Products of the year 2024

Annina Schopen,

3rd place, handling, assembly and production logistics: Fipa

The Cobot Smart Gripper CSG from Fipa is an area gripper with an internal electric vacuum pump for compressed air-free automation. It came third in the handling, assembly and production logistics category in the competition for the products of the year 2024.

Equipped for the future: For reasons of sustainability andCO2 neutrality, the long-term focus is on the complete electrification of production and logistics. In this context, the trend is towards compressed air-free production that does not require high-maintenance compressed air distribution networks. Automation allows companies in many industries to streamline processes in which only light loads are moved and to increase efficiency. Cobots or very small industrial robots with low payloads are often used here.

Cobots enable close collaboration with humans and can support workers, particularly in repetitive, monotonous and dangerous work steps. They enable safe and flexible working environments. The use of cobots requires special grippers that must meet a number of requirements specified in ISO TS 15066. Grippers for cobots and small industrial robots should also be as light as possible so as not to affect the payload of the robots too much.

The 100% electrically powered Cobot Smart Gripper CSG from FIPA meets all these requirements and is designed for pick & place applications with payloads of up to 35 kg. This makes it ideal for palletizing cartons. The compact area gripper is aimed at companies that do not have compressed air distribution in their production halls or want to switch to compressed air-free production and logistics. The Cobot Smart Gripper CSG uses an internal electric vacuum pump to generate the required vacuum. Other variants either use ejectors to generate the vacuum or obtain the vacuum via an external vacuum pump. Maintenance and operating costs are significantly higher for these solutions.

Smart handling and pick & place in production and logistics

The Fipa Cobot Smart Gripper CSG is specially designed for cobot applications and optimized for smart handling and pick & place in production and logistics. The compact surface gripper has a low dead weight of 1,360 g and therefore enables optimum utilization of the robot payload. At just 300 x 130 mm, the gripper is very space-saving. The gripper's internal 24V electric vacuum pump enables it to be used in compressed air-free production and logistics processes. An intelligent electronic control system controls the internal vacuum generation and, together with the integrated vacuum switch, ensures a constant vacuum and corresponding energy savings.

A built-in display shows the actual and target vacuum levels. Process parameters can be set manually using buttons next to the display. The flange connection to the cobot conforms to the ISO 9409-1 standard, making it easy to mechanically connect to common cobots and small industrial robots. The scope of delivery includes the UR Cap software plug-in for simple connection to a cobot from Universal Robots (UR). Plug-ins for other robots and cobots can be created on request.
