Schaeffler: World of education for junior staff
With an investment of almost six million euros and a fundamentally new concept, Schaeffler has created a state-of-the-art training environment at the Schweinfurt site that prepares junior staff for the challenges of digitalization and Industry 4.0 in addition to the traditional training content.
In bright and light-flooded rooms, an environment was created that promotes project-oriented and interdisciplinary cooperation between the trainees. Georg F. W. Schaeffler, family shareholder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, called the new training center a lighthouse project and emphasized that the company has been training apprentices for more than 70 years: "If you look at the history here at the Schweinfurt site, the practice of training goes back over a hundred years. The topic of training has always been an important commitment, but also a matter close to the hearts of the family shareholders. My mother and I continue to attach great importance to training and further education in our company. Education and training are of particular value to a major international company that faces global competition and intensive technical change. We can only operate and survive successfully in this challenging environment if we have the best possible level of training, comprehensive know-how and outstanding technical expertise."
Modern workplace concepts were implemented for the redesign of the training center. For example, each trainee no longer has their own fixed workstation, but only uses the machines and tools that are needed for the current learning content and phases. Machine capacities and equipment are reserved and booked via electronic systems.
The so-called "thinking world" as a communication center and place for intellectual work is the central point of the concept. This area is surrounded by eleven technology cubes where practical training takes place. These also include robotics, CNC technology, additive manufacturing processes with 3D printers and augmented reality applications. Thanks to the new concept, theory and practice merge seamlessly across the 4,000 square meters of the training center.
Qualification for the future
Corinna Schittenhelm, Labor Director and Member of the Executive Board for Human Resources, was enthusiastic about the conditions created by the Schweinfurt training center to cope with the effects of the transformation: "We need to have the right training and development opportunities and encourage our employees to take advantage of them. It is our job to prepare our employees in the best possible way for the future opportunities that the change process will bring. This training campus is an outstanding example of this." In future, the facilities at the training center will not only be used for training, but also for the further education of employees.
In this context, Corinna Schittenhelm explained that the Schaeffler Academy has now also been certified as an educational institution by TÜV Süd in accordance with the Accreditation and Approval Ordinance for Employment Promotion. This means that Schaeffler is also able to support the further education and training and qualification of employees with subsidies. To this end, the Schaeffler Academy has already expanded its training catalog to make employees fit for the future topics of e-mobility, digitalization and Industry 4.0.
Dr. Stefan Spindler, Chief Industrial Officer, emphasized that the company has always provided training for its own needs: "The Schweinfurt location is currently training a total of around 300 young people. Schaeffler provides around 1,400 young people at more than 20 locations throughout Germany with training at the highest level." The technology company offers training for 23 industrial-technical or commercial professions as well as the option of 12 different dual study programs.
