Battery production: Webasto and Samsung SDI plan cooperation

Webasto, a global system partner to almost all automotive manufacturers, and Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. based in South Korea agreed on a future cooperation on March 9, 2018. The letter of intent was signed by representatives of both companies at the Webasto headquarters in Stockdorf and provides for cooperation in the production of high-voltage batteries for commercial vehicles.

The agreement covers the development and supply of a battery module from Samsung SDI, which has been specially adapted and optimized for Webasto standard battery systems for commercial vehicles. The prismatic lithium-ion battery cells installed in the module ensure maximum energy density and the most efficient use of space. Webasto integrates this module into its battery packs, which in turn can be combined as required to form a battery system. This design enables individual solutions for the respective requirements of commercial vehicle manufacturers.

"We are very pleased to drive the development of high-quality design-to-cost battery systems with such an internationally successful and qualified partner as Samsung SDI," explains Hartung Wilstermann, Executive Vice President of the Webasto Group's E-Solutions & Services division. "The cooperation with Samsung SDI is a significant step towards our goal of becoming one of the leading global system partners in the field of battery manufacturing. There are three aspects that are important in the battery business and that we have already mastered: in addition to thermal management, these are the integration of large components into vehicles at the manufacturer and our many years of industrialization expertise. This will enable us to optimally support OEMs in the battery business in the future." kp
