Electric motor production
Schaeffler buys Elmotec Statomat
The automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler today concluded a purchase agreement for the acquisition of Elmotec Statomat Holding.
Elmotec Statomat, based in Karben near Frankfurt am Main, is a manufacturer of production machines for the construction of electric motors in large series and has exceptional expertise in the field of winding technology. With this acquisition, Schaeffler is expanding its expertise in the field of electric motor construction and thus further advancing the implementation of its e-mobility strategy. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2019 once all closing conditions have been met. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
"Electromobility is one of our key future fields. With the acquisition of Elmotec Statomat, we are taking another important step towards expanding our manufacturing expertise in this area and consistently implementing our e-mobility strategy," said Klaus Rosenfeld, CEO of Schaeffler AG. "The acquisition puts us in a position to seamlessly map the entire industrialization of electric motor manufacturing within the company in the future and to close the last existing technology gap in the manufacture of rotors and stators."
The owner-managed company Elmotec Statomat, which generated sales of around 40 million euros in 2017 and currently employs around 200 people, has been a technology leader for manufacturing machines in electric motor construction for over 60 years, particularly in the field of stator production. With its individually scalable winding technologies, the company says it has achieved a leading market position in the field of electric motor production. In particular, the technology of bar shaft winding is considered to be the future leader for electromobility in terms of power density, efficiency and efficient large-scale production.
"With its technologies, Elmotec Statomat has already proven its exceptionally high performance and innovative strength in the past. With 13 patent families, which include more than 50 individual property rights worldwide, the company is the industry leader in the field of winding technology in stator production. With this acquisition, we are primarily expanding our manufacturing expertise in the field of electric motors and thus opening up further growth opportunities through the production of electric motors and systems for stator manufacturing," explained Dr. Jochen Schröder, Head of Schaeffler's E-Mobility division.
Schaeffler already acquired Compact Dynamics - a development specialist in the field of innovative electric drive concepts - at the end of 2016. With the acquisition of Elomtec Statomat, this expertise is complemented by know-how in the mass production of stators for electric motors.
"With the Schaeffler Group as an innovative family-owned company with strong manufacturing expertise, we have found the ideal partner for the further development of our technologies. Schaeffler has comprehensive expertise and capacities in tool and special machine construction as well as extensive experience in safeguarding and industrializing technologies. Together, we see considerable growth potential in the production of systems for electric motor construction and electric motors. The shift towards e-mobility promises special opportunities from which all our customers will benefit," said Sadik Sadiku, Managing Partner of Elmotec Statomat.
