Rheinmetall builds SAR satellites
Rheinmetall and Iceye produce satellites in Neuss
Rheinmetall will build satellites in the future: Rheinmetall and satellite specialist Iceye have founded Rheinmetall Iceye Space Solutions GmbH in Neuss for this purpose. The joint venture will focus on the construction of SAR satellites. The agreement was signed by Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, and Rafał Modrzewski, CEO and co-founder of Iceye, in Berlin.
The new joint venture is based in Neuss. As the majority shareholder, Rheinmetall holds 60% of the shares, Iceye 40%. The joint venture plans to commence operations in 2025. The first satellite is to be manufactured on site in 2026.
SAR satellites offer the advantage over conventional satellites that they can generate high-resolution images regardless of weather conditions or the time of day.
Iceye already produces its own satellites, which are used in Ukraine and other countries. Rheinmetall's involvement in the production process is intended to increase the number of units. In addition, Rheinmetall's sales network is to be used to supply the satellites to more customers in the future.
