Independent platform for legal aspects of additive manufacturing

The more additive manufacturing finds its way into industrial practice, the more important legal aspects become in the digital process chain. "We know that there is a great need for information in this area and have therefore decided to establish a separate forum for the topic of law at Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D. The new format will premiere on June 5, 2018," reports Michael Kynast, Managing Director of Messe Erfurt GmbH.

The trade fair has been able to recruit Marco Müller-ter Jung, a proven expert, to organize the content of the forum. The partner and specialist lawyer for IT law at the international commercial law firm DWF is involved in legal issues relating to the development of innovative technologies, including as deputy chairman of the VDI expert committee "Legal Aspects of Additive Manufacturing". "In this committee, we work with engineers and technicians to carry out in-depth analyses in order to identify legally relevant issues in the complex process chain. It is important to raise awareness of the topic, as legal aspects often fall by the wayside in the often hectic day-to-day work. Questions of protection and safeguarding should not only play a role in the finished product, but right at the beginning of the process, at the level of the print data," emphasizes Marco Müller-ter Jung.

The presentations will therefore focus on legal aspects resulting from the digitalization of production. Who owns design data, how can it be ensured that necessary data conversion and transfer processes are carried out securely and do not lead to changes in the product to be printed, and who is liable if errors occur? The forum aims to find answers to these questions. Standards and quality assurance, the insurability of risks in additive manufacturing as well as industrial and intellectual property rights versus freedom of spare parts are further topics that will be discussed. Speakers will include lawyers, technical experts, technology providers, insurance experts and scientists.

The Legal Forum is part of the international trade fair and conference for additive technologies Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D from June 5 to 7, 2018 at Messe Erfurt. The event is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. It has been held in Erfurt since 2004, making it one of the international pioneers of 3D printing technologies. The extensive and unique program of the congress trade fair includes the User Conference and the AM Science Forum, which will be held on 6 and 7 June respectively. The Medical, Dental and Orthopaedic Technology Forum is a new addition to the agenda on both days. The Additive Contract Manufacturing, Design, Tool, Mold and Fixture Construction and Automotive Industry forums will take place on 5 June. The 3D Printed Electronics & Functionality and 3D Metal Printing forums on 6 June and the Aviation Forum on 7 June will round off the top-class congress program over the three days of the trade fair.

The 3D printing community will once again meet on all three days of the 3D Printing Conference. In addition to trend topics and technical innovations, the speakers will also present behind-the-scenes insights into their research and development activities and competitions. The selection of topics ranges from start-up financing and digital fabrication to educational topics. The Start-Up Award will once again be looking for the most innovative founders and the 3D Pioneers Challenge for the best design ideas.
