The Fraunhofer Research Center for Cognitive Production Systems aims to bring together the expertise of the scientific and business locations in Chemnitz and Dresden in the fields of mechanical engineering and production technology, as well as microelectronics and computer science. According to Institute Director Prof. Welf-Guntram Drossel, cognitive systems make it possible to optimally combine the productivity of series production with the resource efficiency of individual production for sustainable value creation. Process chains should be digitally mappable, networkable and controllable using cognitive production systems.

The Center for Explainable and Efficient AI Technologies CEE AI is supported by TU Dresden together with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The joint center bundles activities relating to artificial intelligence and thus strengthens the mechanical engineering and microelectronics sectors, which are strongly represented in Dresden. The CEE AI focuses on the areas of "explainable AI", in particular knowledge modeling, and "efficient AI". The center is headed by Prof. Dr. Frank Fitzek from TU Dresden and Prof. Dr. Jens Lehmann from Fraunhofer IAIS. The research focus is on the development of intelligent dialog systems, particularly for use in companies.
