NarrowBand IoT
Telekom opens innovation room in the IBM Watson IoT Center
Deutsche Telekom is expanding its Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem and opening a Telekom IoT Innovation Space at the IBM Watson IoT Center in Munich. Deutsche Telekom and IBM are jointly developing solutions for IoT and artificial intelligence (AI). To this end, both are contributing their expertise in connectivity, security, artificial intelligence, industry-specific IoT capabilities and cloud-based solutions to the partner network.
One focus is on NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) technology and how companies in the manufacturing industry, healthcare or smart city environment can use insights from the large amounts of data for themselves. "NarrowBand IoT is the trailblazer for the Internet of Things and is a high priority for us," says Ingo Hofacker, who is responsible for the IoT business at Deutsche Telekom Group. "That's why we are upgrading our network at full speed in Germany, Europe and North America and working with strong partners such as IBM. The IBM Watson IoT Center is a fantastic environment to further develop NB-IoT and provide our customers with the IoT applications they expect from us."
IoT innovation room
The Telekom IoT Innovation Space will showcase various applications such as smart parking, intelligent waste and water management, air quality measurement and monitoring, and predictive maintenance solutions. For example, Telekom's existing air quality solution will be combined with the Watson IoT platform: sensors collect and transmit air quality data from virtually any location, which is then aggregated across multiple neighborhoods, analyzed and combined with weather forecasts and traffic information. A monitoring tool provides mayors and city employees with meaningful insights and contextual data for forecasts and measures to improve air quality. Citizens can find out about the air quality at their location via an easy-to-use mobile app.
"Since the inauguration of the IBM Watson IoT Center, we have seen tremendous interest from partners and clients who are ready to assemble teams in our cognitive collaboration to innovate with our experts and shape the future of IoT," said Sherri Thomas, Head of the IBM Watson IoT Center. "We are delighted to welcome Deutsche Telekom and add them to a strong community of clients and partners including BMW, BNP Paribas, Capgemini, Tech Data and Tech Mahindra."
Partnerships are key
Deutsche Telekom is developing NB-IoT applications with a number of other research institutions and partners from industry and science. For example, in the Telekom Open IoT Labs together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML in Dortmund and the Deutsche Telekom European Smart Solutions Center in Budapest.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the biggest drivers of digitalization and has arrived in almost all industries. But the challenges are complex. Only concrete experience, practical technologies and orientation can help. Deutsche Telekom has everything you need for the Internet of Things: We advise, build the networks, manage the devices and ensure security. cs
