Integration of existing meters into digital energy systems

Spectra digitizes existing meter infrastructures

In building automation, energy monitoring and not least when modernizing existing systems, the quality of the data determines how efficiently a system works in the end. Transparent processes and optimized operating costs require that consumption values can be seamlessly recorded and evaluated.

This is precisely where the G30 M-Bus Gateway from Spectra GmbH & Co. KG comes in. The compact solution integrates existing electricity, water and gas meters into modern communication structures, creating a link between established measurement technology and modern system architectures. M-Bus meters are connected and the recorded data is forwarded to higher-level systems such as building management systems or energy management platforms via Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU. Consumption values can thus be centrally recorded, analyzed and used for optimization measures.

The integrated WLAN interface is particularly important. It enables the wireless transmission of meter data and significantly reduces the installation effort. This makes integration noticeably easier, especially in existing systems where additional cabling would only be possible with considerable effort.

The design is also tailored to practical requirements: With dimensions of 90 × 56.4 × 40 mm, the device is suitable for tight installation situations. At the same time, it meets the requirements of industrial and building services applications. An extended operating temperature range of -40 °C to +75 °C and frame earthing to protect against electrostatic discharge ensure reliable operation even under demanding conditions. Status LEDs on the front enable quick diagnosis of the current device status.

The gateway is correspondingly broadly positioned for integration into different applications: It has an M-Bus master interface, Ethernet for Modbus TCP, a serial interface (RS232/RS485) for Modbus RTU and WLAN. Configuration is carried out via an integrated web interface, which allows structured parameterization of all interfaces.

The end result is a comparatively simple step with a big impact: existing meter infrastructures can be digitized with the G30 M-Bus Gateway and transferred to modern automation and energy management systems without costly conversions.
