Water-cooled motors

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Higher performance in a compact design

With Baumüller's new portfolio of water-cooled motors, this cooling option is now available across almost the entire product range, from size 45 servo motors to size 560 torque motors.

Numerous applications, for example in the textile industry, plastics processing, the food industry or in forming and bending machines, benefit from the advantages of water-cooled motors. The performance of water-cooled servomotors is up to 50 percent higher compared to the uncooled version. Motors can therefore be smaller in size and achieve higher dynamics with high torques, which are made possible by the excellent cooling properties.

Another important advantage is that the heat is dissipated directly at the motor. Motors can therefore be installed close together without the system overheating. The drive system is therefore much more compact. As the heat is already dissipated in the machine, temperature-sensitive products can also be processed. Water-cooled motors also reduce dependence on environmental conditions. The effectiveness of fan cooling systems decreases when the ambient temperature rises. In addition, impurities in the air lead to contamination of the fans, the cleaning of which generates service costs.

With its complete portfolio of water-cooled motors, Baumüller offers a high degree of scalability. The servomotors are available in sizes 45 to 132 with water cooling. The main drives are available from frame size 100 to frame size 280, the torque motors from frame size 135 to frame size 560 in water-cooled versions. In the servo motors in sizes 45 and 56, the water cooling is located directly in the motor housing. This means that the dimensions of the water-cooled servomotors are the same as those of the uncooled versions. The higher performance is therefore not at the expense of compactness. In addition to water, the motors can also be cooled with oil. This is an advantage for servo-hydraulic systems that already have oil available in the machine.
