With a maximum speed of 10,000 rpm, it can achieve five times the speed of comparable stepper motors. In combination with a gear reduction ratio of 100:1, it delivers a torque of 5 Nm. The motor achieves these values with a diameter of just 32 mm. This makes it ideal for numerous applications in areas such as aerospace, laboratory automation, large optical systems, the semiconductor industry, robotics and 3D printing.

The AM3248 multipole two-phase stepper motor makes 48 steps per revolution and offers a very high holding torque of 85 mNm. It starts at a high speed from the first step; its low moment of inertia allows it to be used in applications that require very fast acceleration and quick changes of direction. Newly developed large ball bearings extend the already long service life of this motor type even further. The performance values it achieves in combination with a type 32 GPT gearbox are unique on the market in its size class. The motor can also be combined with an IE3 series magnetic encoder.

These features and options make it ideal for a range of demanding applications. These include, for example, the alignment of solar panels on satellites. The motors move the booms to keep the panels in the optimum position in relation to the sun at all times. Not only do they have to work precisely and reliably over many years, they also have to be able to withstand the extreme temperatures in space. In the semiconductor industry, very high dynamics and speed are required when positioning the wafers, with very tight installation conditions in the machines. Here too, maximum precision and reliability are essential.

"Our new AM3248 model meets all requirements and is ideally suited for such high-performance applications," explains Thomas Würgler from Faulhaber Precistep. The company unit, which specializes in stepper motors, is based in the Swiss watchmaking town of La Chaux-de-Fonds. "We can also adapt the product to the requirements of the respective application in small quantities. Our customers receive the entire drive package from us, including technical advice and support from a single source."
