Safety PLC
Safety through redundancy: double PLC
In recent years, compliance with international safety standards has become an indispensable requirement for success on the global markets. An equally decisive criterion is being able to restore the system as quickly as possible after a control system failure. Many central applications in production therefore require full redundancy in accordance with Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL 2) as per IEC 61508. Only then will the critical systems remain functional even in the event of a failure or accidental damage to the primary CPU unit.
The Melsec iQ-R PLC redundancy pair from Mitsubishi Electric meets the requirements of this standard for functional safety for the international market, as certified by TÜV Rheinland. The guidelines within the redundancy standard require a completely duplicated PLC housing with all modules, which is immediately switched over to in the event of failure of the primary system.
No separate safety control required
The GX Works3 programming platform provides a common environment for programming both process and safety control. This enables the execution of integrated process and safety control programs with a single CPU module. This means that the user does not lose any time and there are no costs associated with the purchase and installation of a separate safety controller.
Process safety and reliability are the main reasons for plant operators to install redundant automation controllers in their systems. Mitsubishi Electric has therefore added a further level of protection to the basic redundancy architecture of the iQ-R. In addition to the power supply module, the base unit and the network module, the safety version of the PLC comprises a set consisting of a SIL 2 process CPU module and a separate SIL 2 function module. This ensures continuous operation by switching to standby mode if a fault occurs in the control system. All Melsec System Q PLC CPUs are interchangeable. This allows the performance of the system to grow with the application.
