Process control with functional safety

With its Modicon M580 Safety PLC system, the automation company Schneider Electric is now combining the performance of the M580 series with a safety-oriented co-processor. According to the manufacturer, this enables the simultaneous, standard-compliant execution of automation tasks and safety applications (SIL3/Ple) on one PLC control unit.

With its Modicon M580 Safety PLC system, Schneider Electric combines the performance of the M580 series with a safety-oriented co-processor.

The manufacturer's overall solution concept supports the standardization of functional safety applications with process control and is designed to ensure the protection of the entire operating environment. The product has a redundant design to ensure correct operation. While one processor is responsible for executing the safety functions, a second processor ensures the integrity of the computing operations.

According to Schneider Electric, an error in the standard part therefore does not lead to a failure of the safety system or influence the system safety and the connected protective devices. Both safety and PLC applications should also only require a single programming software (Unity Pro XLS). The product fulfills the safety requirements in accordance with IEC 61508/61511. sw
