ETG offers manufacturer-independent diagnostic interface
The EtherCAT Technology Group (ETG) has published a new manufacturer-independent diagnostic interface that enables third-party providers to access diagnostic data from EtherCAT networks.
The software-based interface can be implemented in the EtherCAT master of any manufacturer. This makes it an interesting function for manufacturers of both control systems and diagnostic tools.
Diagnostics is one of the most important functions of a modern fieldbus system. EtherCAT has exceptional diagnostic properties at both hardware and software level. An outstanding EtherCAT feature is the ability not only to detect errors, but also to localize them precisely. This includes bit errors as well as loose plug connections. The corresponding error counters are supported by all EtherCAT slave devices. This enables users, machine builders and system integrators to ensure the robustness of EtherCAT networks and thus reduce machine downtimes to a minimum. In addition, diagnostic routines test the quality of communication and help to detect internal errors in slave devices, incorrect cabling sequences, damaged cables or EMC faults.
The ETG has defined this manufacturer-independent diagnostic interface in such a way that third-party diagnostic tools can work with any master implementation. No hardware adaptations are necessary, as EtherCAT masters and the interface are both software-based. According to the company, the interface is easy to implement and requires little memory. This makes it particularly suitable for embedded devices with limited memory.
The standardized interface enables access to EtherCAT network diagnostic information for hardware and software. The information provided by this new interface allows diagnostic tools or HMIs to retrieve the network topology information, compare it with the expected configuration and detect communication interruptions and faults as well as unexpected status changes of the slave devices.
The ETG.1510 "Profile for Master Diagnosis Interface" specification extends the "EtherCAT Master Classes" specification and expands the EtherCAT master object directory already defined in the "Modular Device Profile" specification. The access mechanism also uses the mailbox gateway functionality already specified. Based on existing standards, the new profile is therefore simple and straightforward to implement, according to ETG.
