Control system

Andreas Mühlbauer,

From engineering to hardware

With i³ Control, Yaskawa presented a completely new automation platform for the first time in spring. Now the company is officially launching the first products. The special feature of this ecosystem is that it forms a technically coordinated overall solution for industry-specific control systems - from engineering software and controller hardware to integrated chip technology. And in the future, even beyond that.

As an initial anticipation of the continuously growing i³ Control portfolio, the specially developed software environment - i³ Engineer - and the first machine controller for this new platform - the iC9200 series - are now making their world premiere. The market launch is planned from the beginning of 2023.

Software environment i³ Engineer

The i³ Engineer engineering software opens up the entire platform, which is characterized by openness, flexibility and scalability on the basis of a Linux-based operating system. Programming languages in accordance with IEC61131-3 and PLCopen function blocks are supported, as are the scripting languages C#, C++, Python and Matlab Simulink. This opens up
This opens up completely new possibilities for the development of individual applications, even in global teams.

At the same time, the software is tailored precisely to the respective scope of performance of the Yaskawa components. This means that the software always guides the user simply and reliably to the optimum solution for maximum performance, without the user having to know the relevant products in detail.

iC9212M-FSoE machine controller with safety

In the next step, the iC9212M-FSoE controller with safety integrated will be introduced. It is available with EtherCAT Master as standard. Profinet Device and Control are optionally available and can be easily activated via a license key. HMIs can be connected via an OPC UA server. The iC9200 series also uses the modules of the proven SLIO system as an I/O platform. This means that this controller is fully usable right from the start.

At the heart of the new controllers is the profichip Triton from Yaskawa. The VxWorks-based processor, specially designed for industrial applications, is ideally suited for the fast processing of demanding motion sequences with its three individually switchable cores.

The profichip Triton combines its powerful multi-core processor with industrial Gigabit-capable Ethernet communication and a fast, reliable backplane bus system. It thus offers a future-proof, flexibly scalable solution for customized systems with low total cost of ownership.

Complete system for motion control and automation

i³ Control is designed as a modern motion concept and is now being gradually expanded into a comprehensive overall system for motion and automation. The iC9212M-EC machine controllers are now available for synchronous control of up to 16 servo axes. Robotics integration will be available from spring 2023. The safety version will follow in
follow in summer 2023.

The aim is to create an integrated platform that allows the machine manufacturer to access all functions - from frequency inverter control, motion control and safety to robot programming and control - in the same environment.
