Recycling of fiber-reinforced tapes in... (www.polyformnext.de)

Continuously detach fiber composite material

The sales market for plastic products is growing. At the same time, the environmental impact of non-degradable plastics is increasing and requires new recycling strategies. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT in Aachen, researchers have developed a recycling process to recover the fiber composite material from used pressure tanks in a separation process and reuse it for new lightweight products.

Glass fiber reinforced lightweight components (www.polyformnext.de)

Cold curing with light

Lightweight components are increasingly being used in the mobility, transportation and construction industries and the demand for large-area components made from fibre-reinforced plastics is growing steadily. A Fraunhofer IPT research project has developed a production system for a cold-curing semi-finished fiber composite product that speeds up the production process while saving energy and resources.

Tubes for high vacuum applications (www.polyformnext.de)

Hybrid of FvK and stainless steel

For applications in extremely high vacuum, such as the planned European Einstein telescope for detecting gravitational waves, stainless steel tubes are usually used. However, these are relatively expensive. A hybrid tube, which contains only a thin functional layer of stainless steel while glass fiber-reinforced plastic provides the required mechanical properties, is intended to offer a cheaper alternative.

Fiber-metal laminates with biomaterials

Recyclability and compostability are particularly in demand for building materials in order to reduce the environmental impact at the end of the product life cycle. The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT in Aachen is working with three partners from industry and science to develop a production system for the construction of façade elements as well as air freight and residential containers that will make it possible to produce fully recyclable fiber-metal laminates with compostable biomaterials.

Fraunhofer IPT conducts research with new injection molding machine from Arburg

The Fraunhofer IPT recently acquired a new electric injection moulding machine from Arburg with a clamping force of 320 tons, which is particularly suitable for the production of high-precision and large-area optical components. This makes it the only research institution in Germany that already uses an injection molding machine of this size for research projects and sampling of optical components.
