Hänchen composite material conquers new areas

In 2019, Hänchen invested 1.2 million euros in production facilities at the Oettingen branch alone. IT projects and a further lathe at the Ostfildern headquarters have also been added, and the composite material H-CFRP has found new areas of application.

"In this very mixed year, we have once again invested heavily in the future - both in production equipment and in tried-and-tested and new products and services," summarizes Tanja Hänchen, Spokeswoman of the Management Board. "2018 is behind us with record sales of 22 million euros. We will not quite be able to match this result in the current year due to economic developments. Our Ratio-Drive complete system for drive solutions continues to develop positively." The Servoseal sealing concept is also very successful. Hänchen uses the composite material H-CFK, which it developed itself, for its own products and is also conquering new areas with it.

Carbon products made from H-CFRP
The material H-CFRP, which is produced using the filament winding process, was originally intended for lightweight construction in mechanical engineering. Now users are discovering other possible applications, for example in the field of handling. Among other things, a large shaft with a length of 5,500 millimetres is being manufactured as a series product as a handling core for unwinding fabric. This can be used, for example, to unwind fabric for car interiors. As in other applications, the low weight and associated low lifting forces play a decisive role here.

Another example of an application outside the industry is the reinforcement of rotors in electric motors with H-CFRP. Hänchen also offers the service of wrapping the components for such applications.

Servoseal seal
The range of the Servoseal sealing system introduced two years ago has now been extended to cylinders with a diameter of up to 350 millimetres. The seal was optimized through FEM analyses, i.e. the use of finite elements, after Hänchen had already used its own practical testing in the test field during development. A seal test rig developed and built in-house was used for this purpose.

The new seal, with a retaining ring made of H-CFRP, produces only minimal leakage and yet offers low friction values and is virtually wear-free even at low amplitudes, high frequencies and speeds. This is why these seals can often be used instead of throttle gap seals. They make the hydraulic cylinder more energy-efficient, allow for shorter designs and enable technical solutions that were previously not feasible. Thanks to the Servoseal, Hänchen is gaining new customers in the hydraulics sector, even though this is no longer a growth market.

Mechanical engineering
Hänchen has also further established itself in the construction of machines as part of Ratio Drive projects. Its expertise in the realization of hydraulic and electric drive technology plays just as important a role here as its extensive expertise in taking into account the Machinery Directive up to Performance Level e (PLe). as
