Desoutter commissioning service

Using modern tools correctly

Modern screwdriving systems document the screw connection or guide workers via a monitor. Desoutter supports its customers during commissioning with the Start-up program in order to make the most of the system's capabilities.

"If you want to increase quality and reduce costs in assembly, for example, you need comprehensive control over your overall processes - and of course over each individual operation within these processes," says Emil Gümüsdagli, Head of Service at Desoutter in Maintal. By using process control systems, intelligent tools and other IT, companies can now ensure that every work step, such as tightening a screw, is carried out correctly and with the right result - and that this is documented for years to come.

"Computer-controlled screwdriving systems and the requirements of VDI/VDE 2862 - which defines the minimum requirements for the use of screwdriving systems and tools in industry - have led to quantum leaps in assembly in recent years," says Gümüsdagli. "On the one hand, this increases quality, efficiency and productivity. On the other hand, however, users also have more details to consider."

Modern tools are much more complex and powerful than simple pneumatic and electric screwdrivers - but therefore also require more consultation. "The systems not only have to be tailored to the application, but also to the customer's individual requirements," explains the Desoutter manager. "That's why our technicians are usually on site when our screwdriving systems are commissioned on the line, for example to carry out the initial parameterization."

Re-parameterization makes sense
The experience of the Desoutter experts shows that these presettings often have to be readjusted in practice after the first few days in series production: for example, if the thread tolerances or friction values of the screws are greater than expected or if different components are used than originally specified. Or if the suppliers change. "Even with minor deviations, reparameterization makes sense," emphasizes Gümüsdagli. "The production managers then usually contact us again straight away to request an expert for the programming."

This is because, on the one hand, those responsible for assembly in companies today have to take on more and more tasks, meaning that they can no longer manage everything. "And our employees naturally have a wealth of experience that our customers are welcome to use," says the Business Manager. In any case, he believes that the risk is too great that quality defects could occur in entire product batches after the start of series production due to prematurely and not optimally set or adapted tightening parameters. Ultimately, many things often turn out differently in practice, even if you try to check all eventualities in advance.

Start-up support from experts
To avoid such imponderables, Desoutter offers support for the commissioning of new screwdriving systems. The service package is called Start-up and includes the entire start-up support. In addition to installation, parameterization and tool setting, the package also includes functional tests. Desoutter employees also back up the screwdriving data, carry out a machine capability test and test in accordance with DGUV regulation 3. Users are instructed in the correct handling of the tools and, finally, production is monitored until it is ensured that everything is running smoothly.

"Some customers contacted us again at a later date because of irregularities, which were then explained by user errors," says Gümüsdagli. Now the start-up package includes training for the workers involved with the system. Because the process is accompanied throughout the entire start-up, users can ask their questions directly and subsequently rectify minor issues themselves if there is a hitch. "Users gain security, produce to the desired quality right from the start and have the certified certainty that we comply with all design specifications and standards," says Gümüsdagli.

Desoutter uses a calculator to calculate the start-up costs depending on the tools used and production conditions, so that companies can estimate what they would need to invest for an efficient start to series production before production begins. as
