Acquisition of 3D printing service provider
BASF buys Sculpteo
BASF acquires the 3D printing service provider Sculpteo. With the acquisition, BASF aims to further expand its position as a service provider in additive manufacturing. Distribution channels and new materials also played a role in the purchase decision.
BASF New Business GmbH has acquired the 3D printing service provider Sculpteo. An agreement was signed on November 14. The acquisition of the French 3D printing specialist with locations in Paris and San Francisco enables BASF 3D Printing Solutions GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of New Business GmbH, to introduce new materials in the field of industrial 3D printing more quickly and establish them on the market. The aim is to further develop the 3D printing platform and expand it into a global network. Users and partners of BASF 3D Printing Solutions can then use the platform to market their services and expand their customer base.
For around 10 years, Sculpteo has been operating an online platform with integrated production for the manufacture of prototypes, individual products and series components using various additive manufacturing processes. Users from various industries around the world use the service to quickly produce new components.
"The acquisition of Sculpteo will enable us to provide customers and partners with innovative 3D printing solutions more quickly. Our customers will also benefit from an expanded range of services," explains Dr. Dietmar Bender, Managing Director of BASF 3D Printing Solutions. "Together with Sculpteo, we are pursuing the goal of gradually establishing additive manufacturing as a technology for industrial mass production."
For Sculpteo customers, the merger of the two companies provides access to a broad portfolio of 3D printing materials. "We are very much looking forward to working with BASF. Access to BASF's research and development resources will enable us to provide innovative solutions to our customers," says Clément Moreau, CEO and co-founder of Sculpteo. Moreau will continue to serve as CEO of Sculpteo.
In addition, the synergies of the Sculpteo Design Studio and the technical experts at BASF will be utilized to support customers already in the planning phase of their 3D printing project. This will enable BASF to offer holistic solutions for industrial 3D printing.
The takeover still has to be approved by the relevant competition authorities.
