3D printing

THE job engine 2018

According to an analysis by the job platform Joblift, additive manufacturing is developing into a job engine in 2018, with growth of almost 90% on the job market compared to the previous year. From around 2,178 job advertisements in 2016, there were already 4,099 vacancies in 2017.

The increasingly sophisticated technology and its use in many industries is making this upswing possible. "The potential of 3D printing is being increasingly recognized and used in many industries. However, the production of high-quality parts requires trained specialists. This starts with data preparation and preparing the processes for the machine, continues with close process control of the materials used, machine parameters, machine maintenance, etc. and ends with the downstream processes, which also require a certain amount of expertise in the use of chemical solvents in the stereolithography sector, for example," comments Daniel Cohn, Managing Director of the Proto Labs locations in Germany, on the evaluation of the job portal.

"In addition, as with work on other industrial machines, a number of specifications must also be adhered to when using 3D printers. This is why Proto Labs only employs trained specialists. In our experience, applicants with a background in CAD, tool or model making, industrial mechanics or similar can adapt very well to the requirements of 3D printing. We also employ engineers in the areas of process engineering, technical service or in management roles in the individual teams. In order to work successfully in 3D printing, process control in particular is a decisive factor, which also entails a corresponding level of effort and demands on personnel."
