USB industrial cameras celebrate anniversary

15 years ago, IDS launched the first industrial camera with a USB interface onto the market. The interface, which was widely used in the consumer sector, was not considered suitable for industrial use at the time. Today, USB is also firmly established in the industrial environment.

In April 2004, the first industrial camera with a USB interface was launched on the market, developed and produced by IDS in Obersulm. This made IDS one of the pioneers who were early adopters of this technology for their high-performance digital cameras. "Our decision to use USB was initially met with a lot of ridicule," recalls company founder Jürgen Hartmann. "But we made the interface suitable for industrial use. USB is very much driven by the consumer market and is therefore the ideal solution for developing cost-effective yet powerful camera applications."

Within a year, IDS made the switch from developing analog frame grabbers to digital industrial cameras. With success. Now in its third generation, the interface has become an integral part of the market. With well over a million cameras sold, IDS is now one of the market leaders in the industrial camera sector. The product portfolio has expanded since 2004. The range now includes more than 600 models with USB 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1 Gen1 interfaces. The IDS NXT vision app-based industrial cameras with artificial intelligence are currently available as app enhancements for users. as
