Distance measuring module

Sensor use case for level measurement

Unitronic, a development service provider from Düsseldorf and member of the Swedish technology group Lagercrantz, presented the UM0090 ultrasonic distance measurement module from Audiowell Electronics at Sensor+Test 2019.

As part of an application example, it was demonstrated how the fill level of a waste bin is automatically recorded by the sensor and the data is transferred to a cloud system via a LoRa network. "We wanted to use the use case to demonstrate our solution expertise and services in the Sensor2Cloud environment, including in the area of LoRa and NarrowBand IoT projects," says Michael Haenel, Head of Development and IoT/M2M Communication at Unitronic.

The UMM0090 module measures the time interval between sending the ultrasonic pulses and receiving the echo in order to determine the distance to nearby objects. The distance value is indicated by the pulse width of the output signals. "Advanced signal processing technology is used in the Audiowell module to increase measurement reliability and interference suppression," explains Eduard Schäfer, head of the sensor department at Unitronic.

From robotics to containers and drones
The possibilities and advantages of the sensor module were illustrated at the trade fair using a fill level measurement. The measured data is transmitted to the cloud over long distances using a LoRa network to save energy and the measured fill levels are then displayed graphically on a screen. The results can then be used, for example, to empty containers as required or fill them to a limited extent. Applications for this sensor module include robotics, intelligent street lighting, intelligent waste containers (garbage cans), drones and many other smart devices. as
