Measurements in precision machining
Micromechanical precision machining for humans: Vicivision is an ideal partner for Ulitità.
Utilità currently uses three measuring machines for the quality control of precision components. The family business founded by Andrea Zamberlan is based in Costabissara, just a few kilometers from Vicenza. Semi-finished products have been manufactured here since 1992, which are then supplied to companies in a wide range of industries. Initially, Utilità's products were mainly supplied to the jewelry and watchmaking industries. In 2004, the company expanded and began manufacturing for the aviation industry. In recent years, the areas of oral implantology, orthopaedics, spinal and maxillofacial prosthetics and micro-precision mechanics have been added.
Andrea Zamberlan, CTO & founder of Utilità: "We are basically nothing more than technically oriented jewelers who now transfer the "beauty", i.e. the aesthetics of jewelry, to mechanical components. Precision mechanical components, to be precise. Vicenza is known for its jewelry industry and goldsmithing. My father's company was also active in this field. After repeated talk of the need to fundamentally reinvent this craft, we decided to found Utilità in 1992. We started producing the first components and soon realized that there was a great demand for our products. Subsequently, we also ventured into titanium parts. And finally, we added more and more implants and medical components to our product range. If we want to hold our own in this market, it must not just be about increasing production capacity. Rather, we must focus on manufacturing and supplying high-quality components. It is important to have employees who know exactly what the requirements are for high-quality components and how to meet them."
Stefano Castegnaro, Production Manager: "At Utilità, we always focus on people and their needs. We work with the aerospace industry, but we also supply dental, orthopaedic and orthodontic implants. Of course, we can only manufacture these if we have comprehensive technological expertise and the corresponding high-tech equipment."
Importance of an optical measuring machine
Nicola Zamberlan, CTO & founder of Utilità: "We receive 2,500 orders every year and produce around 1.5 million parts. This enables us to produce even extremely complex components. The use of an optical measuring machine is essential, as this is the only way we can determine whether any tool wear has occurred during machining."
Zamberlan says: "We bought our first Vicivision in 2004. Once the machine has been programmed correctly, all we have to do is insert a clean part and press start. Vici does the rest. With the Vici machines, we can precisely check shape and position tolerances."
User-friendliness is crucial
"With the Vici machine, I can check all relevant dimensions as well as all recesses on the entire component. And all with just a single scan. With a good program, we can check all external dimensions in one pass."
And this is where Vicivision can score points. The processes in the company can be significantly accelerated. Above all, however, its use simplifies the work of the machine operators. "Even when we carried out the first tests with the Vici, we were pleasantly surprised."
