Inductive distance sensors

Mara Hofacker,

Precise measurement, individual parameterization

Baumer is launching the new AlphaProx distance-measuring inductive sensors with IO-Link interface. In addition to micrometer-precise distance values, two switching points, counter values, switching frequency and comprehensive diagnostic data are directly available for evaluation.

Thanks to extended parameter options with IO-Link, the sensors can be adjusted to the respective application. In addition to the scaling of the distance characteristic curve (real distance vs. measured value output), the switching points and the counter function, various modes such as high-speed and high-accuracy as well as time filters for fast or precise applications can be set individually via IO-Link. The offset caused by the installation can be easily compensated for. IO-Link also enables simple plug & play sensor replacement without the need for manual parameterization.

According to Baumer, AlphaProx sensors with IO-Link can perform a wide range of tasks, such as measuring the position of gripper jaws, counting batch sizes, controlling and monitoring belt tensions or flexibly controlling vibratory conveyors by measuring frequency and stroke. Not only the primary function in the application can be solved with the new sensors. The simple evaluation of secondary data, such as temperature, supply voltage, operating time or switching cycles, enables predictive maintenance and therefore optimum machine availability.

The inductive sensors are available in a cylindrical design in sizes from Ø6.5 mm to M30. They have a scalable, linear characteristic curve, which ensures simple control integration thanks to a distance-proportional measured value. They detect objects and measure distances over large measuring ranges of up to 18 mm. The negligible series dispersion and minimal temperature drift guarantee process reliability.
