AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement
Slight drop in sales in the first quarter
The AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement conducts a quarterly survey of its 450 members on economic developments. The industry reports a one percent drop in sales for the first quarter compared to the previous quarter.
Incoming orders rose by four percent at the beginning of the year. The industry expects a four percent drop in turnover for the second quarter. 25% of companies have already registered short-time working in the first quarter.
Turnover and incoming orders in German industry were still recovering to some extent at the start of the year. However, the coronavirus pandemic, which triggered a massive slump in demand and supply worldwide, has since reversed the economic trend. The effects of the pandemic are impacting production, supply chains, sales markets and the German labor market. According to the AMA Association, it is currently difficult to estimate how severe the slump will be for sensor and measurement technology manufacturers. In the current quarter, the industry is expecting sales to fall by four percent.
"As national and international sales markets have slumped massively due to the coronavirus pandemic, this is having a delayed effect on manufacturers of sensors and measurement technology," says Thomas Simmons, Managing Director of the AMA Association. "The economic development in the first quarter shows that suppliers to the automotive industry were particularly affected and had to absorb significant sales losses. They and suppliers to the mechanical and plant engineering industry are therefore also pessimistic about the current quarter. The AMA members who supply the building automation and medical technology sectors are quite different. They recorded slight growth in the first quarter and are clearly confident about the current quarter."
