Constant change
The Hannover Messe was held for the first time in 1947, at that time still under the name "Export Fair 1947 Hannover". It was initiated by Alfred Kubel, then Minister of Economic Affairs of Lower Saxony, and Gustav Bratke, the head of the city, as a counterweight to the Leipzig Trade Fair. The aim was to establish Hanover as an international trade fair location.
Since the beginning, the trade fair has been accompanied by two key factors: politics and change. Every year, the trade fair is opened by political dignitaries from Germany and the respective partner country. And every year, the Hannover Messe adapts to industrial trends. This can be seen in the so-called flagship fairs of the world's largest industrial trade fair.
Admittedly, some of the leading trade fairs of the past have raised the question of whether the topic was correctly located in Hanover. The leading trade fair Microtechnology, the trade fair for applied microsystems technologies and nanotechnologies from 2009, should be mentioned here. The fact that it no longer played a role in this form in subsequent years only proves the consistency of change at Hannover Messe.
Another example is the merging of the annual leading trade fair "Industrial Automation" with the biennial trade fair "Motion, Drive & Automation" to form the annual trade fair "Integrated Automation, Motion & Drives". It showcases the broad spectrum of industrial automation, drive and fluid technology.
The future direction of the Hannover Messe will be exciting. The digitalization of production is bringing industry and IT ever closer together. With the discontinuation of the IT trade fair Cebit, Hannover Messe has the opportunity to profitably integrate this topic, which is so important for industry, into the trade fair. This year's edition of the industry show is already showing the first signs. It remains to be seen whether those responsible will push ahead with the integration consistently and in a way that enriches the industry.
