Advent, Advent, the hut is burning!
Advent time - anticipation and contemplation, like every year. Canceled, again. Surprise! Instead, another routine takes hold: catching up on the preventative care we missed in the fall. We have learned what appeals to reason can achieve. Renunciation in favor of the common good - extremely reluctantly. Can we actually take corona seriously as long as - for example - soccer stadiums are being kicked in front of thousands of fans as if everything were as usual? Very difficult. No sense of responsibility for months on end. Or can someone explain to me the pandemic irrelevance of a fun evening at the soccer stadium as opposed to a trip to the Christmas market? It was high time to set an example and leave soccer in front of a large audience alone, just like other events. My colleague Annina Schopen wrote these days that it was difficult not to become cynical in the face of the winter Christmas wave that is repeating itself despite the possibility of vaccination. She's right. I find it even harder - bear with me.
The individual's right to be unreasonable does not always go hand in hand with a democratic understanding of the good of society. When even the otherwise level-headed Lothar Wieler burst his collar and Jens Spahn came out of early ministerial retirement to announce that nothing could be ruled out, it was enough to make you wonder. Perhaps it would help to actually take a look at the country's hospitals. Where nursing staff doubt their vocation at the latest when a corona patient who has recovered after an intensive care stay tells them on discharge that they will not be vaccinated in the future either. That is pure cynicism.
Despite everything, I wish you a wonderful Advent season,
Yours, Andreas Mühlbauer
