Professional protective equipment

Safety through PPE in the rental service

For hygienic reasons, experts expressly do not recommend washing workwear at home. Unprofessional care of protective clothing can even endanger the wearer's life. This is because clothing can be flammable if handled incorrectly or the protective functions of workwear can be lost.

Professional protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory for many activities such as welding, electrical work or even warehouse work. 63 percent of respondents to a recent occupational health and safety survey have to wash their workwear themselves. On behalf of CWS, net-request surveyed 1,000 employees aged between 20 and 60 in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Poland in July 2017. Only employees with jobs in which occupational health and safety plays an important role were surveyed.

Self-washed protective clothing as a safety risk

Employees are therefore left alone with the care of their clothing. This poses a safety risk for protective clothing. For example, heat and flame protective clothing can be flammable after being washed with fabric softener. The luminosity of reflectors is also lost sooner if they are not washed properly and cannot be checked professionally. According to a survey, 25 percent of employees in Germany do not check their clothing regularly. "The right equipment and its care should only be left in professional hands. This applies in particular to checking and maintaining the protective functions of clothing," explains Werner Münnich, Lead Category PPE at CWS.

According to the EU Occupational Health and Safety Directive 89/656/EEC, companies must ensure that their PPE complies with current requirements. The protective functions must be checked regularly and the maximum life cycle of the clothing must be monitored and adhered to. "If 63% are responsible for washing their own workwear, then I assume that the majority of protective clothing is not properly checked and maintained," says Münnich.

"PPE is a complex topic that decision-makers in companies should acquire a basic knowledge of. Not only does procurement require specialist knowledge, but the regular care and maintenance of protective clothing should also be placed in the professional hands of a rental service provider," says the PPE expert.

Safe rental service

Companies benefit from the workwear rental service in several ways. The clothing is professionally washed and refurbished. The rental service provider CWS continuously checks the protective functions of the clothing and ensures that it always complies with current health and safety regulations. If necessary, the company repairs the textiles professionally, replaces them in the event of wear or size changes and also takes care of transportation to and from the customer. On request, the service provider can also affix employee names and company logos to the workwear. All CWS collections are available as a rental service.

The protection of employees is always our top priority. The right welding protective clothing, for example, makes a significant contribution to this. Many companies already use the proFlex4 Advanced welding clothing from CWS. Its little brother, the proFlex4 Essence, offers the same protection in a simplified design. The new class 1 welder's clothing has the same lightweight, patented high-tech fabric.

CWS is once again using its lightweight, tear and cut-resistant high-tech fabric for the ProFlex4 Essence. The welding protective clothing insulates against the effects of heat and electric arcs, ensuring optimum protection for the wearer. It is also characterized by its permanent flame-retardant properties. These prevent afterburning or melting on the clothing. The workwear also offers protection against liquid chemical splashes and has antistatic properties. "ProFlex4 clothing is welding protection at the highest level. With Essence, we offer companies an excellent entry-level model in the line," says Michael Stielow, Product & Marketing DACH at CWS.

Thanks to the lightweight 330 g/m2 fabric, the protective clothing is comfortable to wear andoffers plenty of freedom of movement. The material is also characterized by good moisture regulation and durability. Various pocket solutions on the jacket and trousers offer space to store work utensils. Red contrasting seams add a fashionable touch. The workwear is available in three colors: royal blue, titanium and titanium/steel. It is suitable as a unisex collection for men and women.
