MVTec drives standardization forward

Process automation and image processing grow together

On the occasion of its 33rd participation in the GenICam Standard Group meeting at the IVSM (International Vision Standards Meeting, October 7-11 in Stresa, Italy), MVTec Software, provider of modern machine vision standard software, informs about its active participation in important machine vision standards.

These include the pioneering GenICam (Generic Interface for Cameras) standard, which was introduced in 2006. This standard standardizes software-based access to all types of camera features used within machine vision. All current camera standards, such as GigE Vision or CoaXPress, are based on GenICam. MVTec has been actively contributing to the development of the GenICam standard since 2005. The company has played a key role in initiatives for the simple interoperability of software and hardware and, in particular, for the integration of 3D sensors. With Christoph Zierl, Technical Director at MVTec, the company also provides the Vice-Chair Marketing & Operations in the GenICam Standard Group.

The medium-sized company is also involved in the integration of process automation and industrial image processing. For example, MVTec promotes the utilization of the Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA). This standard ensures consistent data exchange between different industrial components - regardless of manufacturer, platform and operating system. To this end, MVTec is working on the "OPC UA Companion Specification for Machine Vision" (OPC Machine Vision for short) as a member of the VDMA. This is a so-called companion specification that serves the needs of the machine vision industry.

Last but not least, MVTec has been a member of the technical committees for the GigE Vision and USB3 Vision camera standards for many years. Here too, MVTec focuses on the seamless integration of 2D and 3D cameras into the software application.

Integration of process automation and machine vision

"Our aim is to significantly advance standardization in industrial image processing. What began in 2005 with our collaboration on the GigE Vision and GenICam standards, we are continuing today with the further development of OPC Machine Vision. In this way, we are making a significant contribution to the seamless integration of process automation and machine vision," explains Christoph Zierl, Technical Director at MVTec Software GmbH.
