Stäubli industrial robots

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Six-axle vehicle in hygienic design

Three new Stäubli six-axis models for the medium payload range are celebrating their premiere. The TX2-140, TX2-160 and TX2-160L models complete the TX2 generation and, with their rigid structure and hygienic design, are recommended for a whole range of applications in environments from harsh to sterile.

To be precise, there are three new models, as the TX2-160 is also available in a version with a long arm under the designation TX2-160L, which gives it a reach of 2010 mm, while the standard version can reach 1,710 mm. The reach of the TX2-140 is still an impressive 1,510 mm. The load capacity of the TX2-140/160 is 40 kg, while this value is reduced to 25 kg for the long-arm version. Stäubli thus closes the gap between the compact TX2-90 and the large TX2-200.

Stäubli specifies a repeat accuracy of ±0.05 mm for all three machines. This makes the robots among the most precise on the world market. In combination with their exemplary dynamic values - for example, the maximum speed of 1,500°/s in axis 5 - the shortest cycle times can be realized. In addition, the stiffness of the wrist has been significantly increased compared to the predecessor model RX160 through the use of Stäubli's own drive technology, which is now also used in axis 5.

Clean and sleek six-axle models

What is also striking about the new machines is their compact design, combined with a design that is consistently trimmed for cleanroom suitability. No external cable and hose package, instead internal media and supply lines without interfering contours, a completely sealed housing in protection class IP 65 (optionally with overpressure unit IP 67), the connections concealed vertically under the robot base on request, dead spaces consistently avoided - this is how hygienic design works today.

Thanks to this cleanroom-compatible design, the new six-axis models are suitable for standard applications as well as for use in sensitive production environments. In the latter case, the manufacturer is focusing in particular on applications in the life sciences, food, pharmaceutical, photovoltaic and similar sectors. The special versions known from the TX2 series, including HE (Humid Environment), ESD (Electrostatic Discharge), Cleanroom and Stericlean versions, will also gradually become available for these applications.

The manufacturer is also particularly proud of the very compact design of the new robots. Stäubli is thus fulfilling the wish of many integrators and end users for an easy-to-integrate six-axis robot with a small footprint, which enables the realization of cells and lines on a minimal production area. While two options are available for the TX2-160 - floor and ceiling mounting - the TX2-140 can also be mounted on the wall.

Standardized control technology with safety functions

The replacement of the predecessor model RX160 by the TX2-140/160 has another advantage: all six-axis machines now work in the same control world, which makes it easier to implement multi-robot solutions in a digitally networked production environment. With the lightweight and compact CS9 controller and pioneering safety functions, the TX2 series has opened a new chapter in human-machine cooperation. For the first time, HRC concepts could be implemented with standard robots and this now applies to the new models in the medium payload range.

The new family members of the TX2 series also have their own digital safety encoder per axis and an integrated safety board. All safety functions are certified and meet the strict requirements of safety category SIL3-/PLe. This guarantees perfect protection for operators and process equipment. Thanks to their extensive safety equipment, Industry 4.0 compatibility including OPC-UA server and their mechanical qualities, including the above-average maintenance intervals, the new robots are guarantors of productivity in both conservative and digitally networked environments.
