More and more industries are discovering the benefits of automation and robotics, including medical technology. With the help of automation, previously manual and sometimes error-prone processes can be completed by machine within a short space of time and the associated processes optimized. An example of a gripper for use in ventilators for Covid-19 patients shows where the potential lies.

The concept, which was developed in collaboration with doctors from the University of Tübingen, is based on automated ventilation via a ventilation bag that can be started up and adjusted via a touchscreen. A pressure of four to 50 millibars, a volume of 200 to 800 milliliters, a frequency of five to 80 cycles per minute and an inspiration time I:E of 1:2 to 4:1 can be set. The system therefore covers all relevant parameters for artificial ventilation of Covid-19 patients.

For the patent-pending system, Schunk uses sensors and mechatronic grippers with additively manufactured gripper fingers from its own portfolio as well as an industrially established control system. The proper functioning of the device is permanently monitored and any faults, such as a leak or obstruction of the ventilation tube, are signaled immediately. Due to the design, it is possible to switch between manual and automated ventilation within a very short time.

"This example illustrates how versatile and reliable our gripping system components can be used in medical technology and other industries," emphasizes Timo Gessmann, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Schunk, and encourages creative use of the potential of automation solutions. "The modular structure of our software and electronics enables us to implement new functions and services within a very short space of time. With our team for innovative automation applications, we are able to successfully implement such developments in a customer- and solution-oriented manner, right through to certification." as
