Sheet metal handling

A trio for magnetic handling

At Automatica, Goudsmit Magnetics will be exhibiting a combination of a magnetic timing belt, a spreading magnet and a magnetic gripper. With this unit, steel sheets can be quickly and accurately separated, lifted and placed in a press.

The timing belt feeds the sheets to and from the press. This takes place at an acceleration of six meters per square second. The optionally switchable permanent or electromagnets make it possible to pick up the sheets with a robot. To avoid picking up two sheets at the same time, the system has two compact, pneumatically switchable spreading magnets. The timing belt is suitable for a sheet thickness of 0.7 to 2.5 millimetres.

The newly developed spreading magnets have strong neodymium-iron-boron magnets and can be switched on and off pneumatically. Switchable spreader magnets separate stacked steel sheets, allowing a robot to remove them individually from the stack. Without such spreaders, oiled sheets stick together and the robot can inadvertently pick up two sheets at the same time. As a result, a sheet falls down or two sheets are placed in a press at the same time, for example, which can lead to considerable damage.

The magnetic grippers with or without rubber cover are used to pick up and hold (perforated) steel sheets and blanks in robot applications. The ultra-light magnets can be switched on and off using compressed air. This allows the system to pick up and transport even very thin steel sheets individually. The rubber pad at the end prevents damage and shifting of the workpiece during vertical pick-up. According to the manufacturer, these magnetic grippers replace conventional vacuum grippers, which are prone to faults and wear. A magnetic gripper with permanent magnets is lightweight, wear-resistant and has a longer service life than vacuum grippers. as
