Dell Technologies and Microsoft simplify implementation

Dell Technologies and Microsoft have announced a partnership to make it easier for industrial organizations to implement end-to-end IoT solutions from the edge to the cloud. By combining IoT applications and services from Microsoft Azure with the VMware Pulse IoT Center and Dell Edge Gateways, customers benefit from optimized management, central monitoring and end-to-end IT security from the end device to the cloud.

When implementing their IoT initiatives, industrial companies today spend considerable resources selecting different hardware, software and cloud services and integrating them into a solution that meets their business requirements. They want to use modern technologies with artificial intelligence or systems for real-time decisions - but at the same time they need to ensure that they meet the strict standards of the IT department in terms of implementation, asset management, security and compliance.

To make it easier for companies to get started with the Internet of Things, Dell Technologies and Microsoft are jointly developing a secure solution that enables consistent infrastructure management from the end device to the cloud. It brings a basic IoT infrastructure, management capabilities and security features and supports IoT scenarios such as predictive maintenance, increasing supply chain visibility and other use cases.

Three components at the network edge

The solution includes intelligence at the edge of the network with Microsoft Azure IoT Edge: this application extends the intelligence of the cloud to the devices at the edge of the company's network. The devices can act locally and at the same time use the cloud for comprehensive coordination and scalable machine learning.

Managing devices at the network edge with VMware Pulse IoT Center provides secure management and reliable monitoring of certified edge devices including gateways, networked IoT devices, BIOS and operating systems. The ecosystem will be further expanded in the future to include deeper integrations and additional certifications.

High-performance Rugged Dell Edge Gateways feature powerful dual-core Intel Atom processors and can connect a variety of wired and wireless devices and systems. The gateways aggregate and analyze the input from the devices and systems and send the relevant data to the cloud.

More than the sum of its parts

Within the solution, the VMware Pulse IoT Center serves as a management bridge between the hardware, connected sensors and devices, and Microsoft Azure IoT Edge. Initially, Pulse will support the implementation of Microsoft Azure IoT Edge for the required edge systems so that the Microsoft solution can begin to collect, analyze and apply data in real time.

Because the joint solution is optimized for Dell Edge Gateways, it can better secure the combination of certified gateways and edge systems with ongoing patches and updates and continuously monitor the health of networked devices. Companies that rely on Microsoft Azure IoT Edge and VMware Pulse IoT Center for their IoT initiatives will be able to deploy, operate and securely manage the desired components of the Microsoft solution.

Customers and channel partners of Dell Technologies and Microsoft will be able to purchase the new IoT solution from the second half of 2018. am
