Support structures become obsolete

Together with Kuka, HS Automation has developed a modular automation cell for a new type of 3D metal printing. The laser welding process with a Kuka robot enables the production of complex metal parts without support structures.

The 3D printing solution welds layers with a minimum wall thickness of 2 mm. Production from solid material is also possible. The finished workpiece requires almost no post-processing. Minimal material waste, low manufacturing costs and almost unlimited design options are the system features.

The printer combines a KR Iontec robot with a rotary tilting table from Kuka, which moves synchronously with the robot arm. Six welding lasers at the end of the print head melt the wire precisely onto the carrier material and the resulting workpiece. The table positions the workpiece so that the print head can weld material in the right place.
