Solutions for surface treatment

Lasers make batteries safe

Trumpf will be presenting manufacturing solutions for surface processing in automotive production at the parts2clean trade fair, including the TruPulse 5050 nano short-pulse laser and the PFO33 scanner optics. The laser applications are used for bonding and coating preparation for batteries in electric cars and for corrosion protection of aluminum components. The short-pulse lasers clean the surfaces of battery cells before coatings and adhesives are applied. They remove oil, rust, oxides and other residues without damaging the material and enable stable adhesion without chemical processes. The technology can be integrated into automated production lines.

For aluminium components in car body construction, such as in mega or gigacasting, lasers homogenize the surface by selectively remelting a few micrometres, followed by rapid quenching. This increases corrosion resistance, even when exposed to salt, and is used not only for car body parts but also for electric motor housings. The PFO33 scanner optics move the pulsed laser beams of the TruMicro Series 7000 at high speed over large areas, which enables short cycle times in series production. Laser-based processing reduces chemical consumption, tool wear and material waste and lowers theCO2 footprint of production, making it a sustainable alternative to conventional processes.
