German Business Hopes for a Easing of Tensions
Sentiment in the German economy improved slightly in June 2026. The ifo Business Climate Index, compiled by the ifo Institute, rose to 85.6 points on a seasonally adjusted basis, up from 85.0 points in May. Companies view their current situation somewhat more positively than in the previous month, and at the same time, their expectations are less pessimistic. Overall, companies report a lower level of uncertainty and express cautious hopes that the global political environment will ease.
The manufacturing sector is showing a slight improvement in the business climate, which is primarily attributable to more optimistic expectations. By contrast, the current situation is viewed as slightly weaker than before, and the order situation also remains tight: The number of new orders declined once again.
The business climate in the service sector has also improved. In particular, current business conditions are viewed much more positively than they were last month. Expectations, however, remain virtually unchanged and continue to be marked by skepticism. Within the sector, the transportation and logistics sector continues to stabilize, while the situation in tourism remains difficult.
The cautious upward trend is also continuing in the retail sector. Retailers are more satisfied with the current business situation, and at the same time, expectations are rising noticeably. Nevertheless, the industry remains well below the levels of previous years, and the recovery from the economic downturn is not yet complete.
The business climate in the construction industry is also improving. This is primarily due to less pessimistic expectations, while assessments of the current situation remain unchanged. Many companies continue to report a lack of orders.
Overall, this reflects a familiar pattern seen in recent months: no clear reversal of the trend, but a slight stabilization at a low level. The overall index remains well below the long-term average and signals that the economic situation in Germany remains fragile.
