Schaeffler focuses on e-mobility: Challenges despite growth
Schaeffler records record e-mobility orders in the first quarter of 2025, but remains in the red despite growth of 7.8 percent in the electric business. The acquisition of Vitesco strengthens the market position, but challenges remain, especially in the USA.
Herzogenaurach (dpa/lby) - The Franconian automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler sees a clear upswing for electromobility. "There are positive signs that something is happening," Schaeffler CEO Klaus Rosenberg told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur. In the first quarter, Schaeffler received orders worth three billion euros in this sector. This is a record, but it is also the first quarter after the merger with e-drive specialist Vitesco.
E-mobility still brings losses
The company is well on track to achieve the forecast for the full year in this division. However, the forecast still envisages losses. In the first quarter, the electrical business grew by 7.8 percent to 1.174 billion euros, with a loss of 268 million euros before taxes, interest and special effects.
Overall, Schaeffler's revenue in the first quarter fell by 3.5 percent year-on-year to 5.9 billion euros. Earnings before interest, taxes and special items fell from 287 million euros in the prior-year quarter to 276 million euros. "The environment in which we operate remains risky and confusing," said Rosenfeld.
Less dependence on China
The takeover of Vitesco has made the company less dependent on the Chinese market, he emphasized. The situation in the USA continues to cause headaches. "We have to cushion the tariffs. We will do this with a sense of proportion." Schaeffler is one of the ten largest automotive suppliers in the world. The company employs more than 113,000 people worldwide.
