Siemens and ebm-papst

Andreas Mühlbauer,

Acquisition of the industrial drive technology business completed

Siemens has completed the takeover of ebm-papst's industrial drive technology business. In future, it will be managed by Siemens under the name "Mechatronic Systems".

With around 650 employees, it comprises intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems in the safety extra-low voltage range as well as innovative motion control systems that are used, for example, in free-moving, driverless transport systems. The acquisition complements the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio and strengthens Siemens' position as a leading provider of solutions for flexible manufacturing automation.

The integration of the new portfolio into the existing automation portfolio and the use of Siemens' global sales network open up new market access and significant business potential in the field of intelligent, battery-powered drive and robot solutions "The new portfolio elements significantly broaden and strengthen our customer offering in the automation and digitalization of production processes for smart factories. The integrated mechatronic drive systems increase flexibility, productivity and efficiency in the globally growing market for conveyor systems and autonomous transport systems, such as mobile robots, driverless transport systems and shuttles," explains Achim Peltz, CEO of the Motion Control Business Unit at Siemens Digital Industries.

The seamless compatibility with Simatic controllers and the Safe Velocity software-based safety solution for mobile robotics is particularly advantageous. The extended portfolio is available in 24V and 48V versions and comprises two main variants: the Simotics E-1EE1 (brushless internal rotor), which are particularly suitable for battery-powered applications in conveyor, storage and sorting systems, and the Simotics E-1EV1 (brushless external rotor), which impress with their high efficiency and compact design in intralogistics. The range is complemented by matching gearbox solutions, which are only available in combination with Simotics E motors.

One particular innovation is the Simotics E ArgoDrive driver guidance system, which has been specially developed to meet the growing demands of intralogistics and automated production. In the Light, Standard and Heavy versions, it enables omnidirectional, safe and precise control of automated guided vehicles, even with heavy loads. These systems support Siemens' sustainability goals with energy-efficient solutions and contribute to the realization of flexible, scalable and safe digital factories.

The newly integrated business comprises two locations in Germany (St. Georgen and Lauf an der Pegnitz) and one location in Romania (Oradea). In March 2024, the ebm-papst Group announced its intention to sell the Industrial Drive Technology (IDT) division to Siemens AG.

Both parties had signed an agreement to this effect. The sale to Siemens, which has now been completed, gives IDT international market access through a global sales organization. This opens up new horizons for innovation and further successful business growth. All of the division's employees have been taken on by Siemens. The parties have agreed not to disclose the price.

Integration Meets Reality

OT meets IT – the two worlds are meant to converge, data is meant to flow, and production is meant to become smart. Yet the reality in industry often remains stubbornly contradictory: while systems have long been technically interconnected, they...
