Machine tools such as CNC machining centers, grinding machines and lathes form the basis of numerous production processes and are indispensable in many industries - from the automotive industry to aerospace technology and electronics manufacturing. The demands placed on the components and parts used are correspondingly high.

Linear technology for machine tools requires high accuracy, repeatability and resilience. At the same time, it must be able to work correctly over a long period of time - often with high cycles, under critical conditions and when dealing with liquids, dust and chips from the manufacturing processes as well as pollutants and corrosive substances. It should also be easy to install or replace, require little maintenance and ensure process reliability. "Our ball screws, linear guideways and linear systems were developed precisely for these requirements," emphasizes Alexander Odenthal, Industry Manager Machine Tools at Rollon, and explains: "Our solutions guarantee high precision, minimize backlash and ensure smooth movement, high rigidity and excellent stability to withstand different loads and forces. Naturally also in continuous operation and with high dynamics."

Rollon is a supplier of linear motion solutions and combines several brands into a competence network for development, production and application. Positioning of tool table and tool head

High forces and torques are the order of the day when machining tools - whether milling, drilling or turning. A combination of ball screw drive and profile rail guide is therefore generally used to position the tool table and tool head. With the Shuton-Ipiranga and Rosa Sistemi brands, Rollon offers both from a single source. The high-end components are characterized by their rigidity, load capacity, dynamics and positioning accuracy and enable precise handling of parts and tools, even with heavy loads and high speeds.

Shuton-Ipiranga has developed the XP Xtrem Position product family with a special focus on linear movements in machine tools. It is available in two versions - Complex and Prime - and enables a high number of cycles. The Complex series is designed for high speeds and loads and is used in five-axis machining centers, multi-spindle machines and mould processing machines, among others. The Prime series comprises high-precision ball screws with a small lead for medium-speed applications, such as grinding machines or spark erosion machines.

If heavy-duty actuators are required, for example in the areas of injection molding, energy, lifting systems and presses, the XL Xtrem Load product family is the first choice. The ball screw drives have been optimized for heavy-duty applications. Three types are available to meet the various requirements in terms of load ratings and speed and to achieve optimum service life: IML, HDL, PKL. With the MG Rail linear guideway from Rosa Sistemi, Rollon offers the answer to the growing technological challenges in machine tool construction. The MG Rail has hardened and ground raceways with rollers. Thanks to its high load capacity, rigidity, its lubrication and sealing concept and its reliability even in dirty environments, it is suitable for high-precision positioning.

Linear technology for machine tools

Efficiency is the be-all and end-all in the production process. Machine and lifting doors as well as drawers for parts logistics also make a significant contribution here. Quick opening and closing shortens cycle times and therefore increases productivity. Rollon systems such as the Compact Rail, the X-Rail or the Telescopic Rail move safely and smoothly and are also highly resilient.

The Compact Rail and X-Rail are self-aligning linear guides. Combinations of different rail and roller types can be used to compensate for parallelism errors of the mounting surfaces in one or two planes (axial and radial) as well as height offset or angular errors between the guideways. This shortens the assembly time, reduces production costs and ensures flexibility. The roller guides have a compact design, are insensitive to dirt and dust and are low-maintenance with a long service life.

The telescopic slides of the Telescopic Rail have particularly rigid profiles and exhibit very little deflection even under maximum load when fully extended - ideal for pull-out elements such as drawers and control panels. The compact pull-outs are characterized by a high load-bearing capacity and long service life, are resistant to impacts and vibrations and offer a high level of safety thanks to various locking and damping mechanisms. The product family includes full and partial extension runners that enable strokes of up to 2 meters in both directions.


Rollon's linear axes are also suitable for linear gantries for loading and unloading as well as vertical tool storage and tool changing systems. The Smart series in particular has proven its worth here. The belt-driven linear axes are suitable for harsh environments and limited space. The product family copes well with high load capacities, where the carriage is exposed to strong forces, and achieves high speeds and accelerations as well as high repeat accuracy thanks to the steel-reinforced drive belt.
