Underwater production of oil and gas
Use and more stringent tests confirm durability
Magma Global's m-pipe, based on high-performance Victrex Peek thermoplastic composite, is a thermoplastic composite pipe that recently received the world's first certification of a subsea pipeline product to DNVGL-RP-F119. The global quality assurance and risk management organization DNV GL defines F119 as the recommended practice for pipelines in offshore oil and gas production.
Following an extensive and demanding test program, m-pipe's product qualification covers dynamic surface-to-seabed applications. The successful certification by the external DNV GL underlines the durability of m-pipe and the materials used. Interest in thermoplastic composites in subsea applications is growing due to their corrosion resistance, performance in sour gas and many aggressive chemicals used in the oil and gas industry.
A webinar is now dedicated to the role that qualification and the use of advanced materials play in this. One of m-pipe's most recent assignments is a 2.5-kilometer flowline for Tullow Oil off West Africa. F119 provides for more than 50 standardized tests to be performed on a thermoplastic composite pipe during the development process in a rigorous investigation to determine failure modes, critical properties and the stress limits of the materials used. Each stage of the pipe's development is tested independently - from the properties of its components to the complete construction of the thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) - to determine the relationship between material data and the overall construction of the composite pipe. sw
