Knoll assembles in China
Knoll, a supplier of conveyor and filter systems for chips and cooling lubricants in the metalworking industry, is now also assembling its systems in Shanghai.
Knoll's international commitment is strategically important. Step by step, the company has established and continues to establish its own branches in key markets around the world. As Knoll products are enjoying increasing demand on the Chinese market, the Upper Swabian family business opened its own branch in Shanghai in November 2018.
Knoll China Machinery, based in the Songjiang district, is a joint venture with a long-standing Chinese partner. It is designed as an assembly plant to manufacture cooling lubricant conveyor and filter systems for the Asian market. The first filters assembled on site were already presented at CIMT 2019 in Beijing in April - "for the first time on a large KNOLL stand of our own", says Roland Längle, Head of Business Development at Knoll. The company succeeded in arousing the interest of European machine tool OEMs that have been producing in China for some time.
Until now, these companies, which are regular Knoll customers in Germany, have mainly purchased the required cooling lubricant systems in China from local suppliers. "This is mainly due to legal and tax reasons," explains Längle. This is set to change in the future.
Defined core components, such as the upper part of the filter, are imported from Germany. For other parts, such as the large-volume tank of a filter system, those responsible look for local manufacturing partners who must, however, meet strict specifications. Längle points out that "every supplier has to undergo a qualification process to ensure that the end customer does not notice any difference to the components from Germany. " as
